    SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

    This person performs a variety of skills work in the turf area including renovation, care and maintenance of specialized turf areas. This person will also assist in the care of plant material including pruning and trimming of trees and shrubs and assisting in all phases of installation and removal. Work also involved is responsibility for performing various manual and light equipment tasks related to turf including spraying, fertilization, irrigation, and all other related maintenance practices to maintain healthy turf in parkways. Work is performed under general supervision and requires the exercise of specialized knowledge in selecting safe and approved work methods, material and tools.

     

    ROUTINE JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Mows, trims, irrigates, seeds, fertilizes, and aerifies specialized turf areas.
    • Assists with aquatic (pond) management which includes aquatic plant control and pond edge maintenance
    • Maintains and repairs grounds and structures related to assigned areas including general clean-up.
    • Assist all general landscaping duties including tree, shrub, and plant maintenance.
    • Maintains records of chemical application schedules, inventories and supplies.
    • Makes minor repairs and adjustments to irrigation systems, mowers and other equipment.
    • Assists in sanding and snow removal operations.
    • Performs related work as required.

    TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:

    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • Three (3) years' experience in a specialized turf field such as lawn care, sports field maintenance, or golf course maintenance.
    • Formal training in a turf related field preferred.
    • Possess or be able to attain within six months of employment a valid State of Iowa commercial pesticide applicator's license with certifications in categories 3OT, 5, 6, 7.
    • Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License issued by the State of Iowa.

    SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:

    The Civil Service testing process will consist of a 1.) Written test and 2.) Onsite oral board interview.  Details regarding the process will be shared with those meeting minimum qualifications. Pre-employment background check and drug test and physical required.     Description of Work
    General Duty Statement

    Performs daily upkeep and maintenance of athletic playing surfaces, such as golf course or sports complex. This includes but is not limited to grounds, open space, irrigation, chemical application and mechanical upkeep of equipment. Assists with snow and ice removal during winter storm events. This position requires the ability to communicate professionally and maintain a friendly customer service attitude while performing manual labor. This position will be working at Harlan and Hazel Rogers Sports Complex.

    Distinguishing Features of the Class: Assists supervisory staff in the planning and implementation of yearly maintenance, renovation and construction projects including laying sod, over seeding, drainage tile installation, irrigation systems, building of greens, tees, bunkers, flower beds and cart paths, turf maintenance needs for athletic playing surfaces and infield maintenance and markings at ball diamonds. Principal duties are performed in an outdoor work environment with various responsibilities during evenings, weekends, and some holidays.

    Supervision
    Works under general supervision of the Golf Course Superintendent, Sports Complex Supervisor or other supervisor designated by the Parks, Recreation and Forestry Director with independence in decisions related to assignments.

    Supervision Exercised
    Serves as team lead and supervises seasonal staff or volunteers as assigned.

    Competencies

    • Demonstrates a full range of ability to maintain sports turf within the City of Fort Dodgeincluding but not limited to topdressing and aerifying greens, tees, fairways and athleticfields, laying sod, over seeding, drainage tile maintenance and irrigation system upkeep(e.g. repair leaks and line breaks).
    • Demonstrates the ability to perform skilled work as well as manual labor in theperformance of athletic turf maintenance, building maintenance and constructionactivities.
    • Demonstrates a strong understanding of maintenance equipment including but notlimited to mowers, carts, sprayers, utility carts and groomers.
    • Demonstrates a full ability to operate vehicles, trucks, equipment and tools related tooperation of golf course and sports turf care; able to perform general maintenance andbasic repairs to grounds machinery, equipment, and tools
    • Demonstrates the knowledge and ability to hold and maintain chemical spray applicatorlicenses in turf grass, with ability to recognize turf diseases and pests; applies pesticidesand fertilizers to sports turf areas.
    • Demonstrates the ability to document and maintain appropriate records for all pesticideuse and applications.
    • Demonstrates a full understanding and ability to implement established city policies inthe purchase of supplies and timesheet submittal.
    • Demonstrates the ability to work with and coordinate agency use at facilities.
    • Demonstrates the ability to make accurate and timely reports to immediate supervisors.
    • Demonstrates a strong understanding of appropriate safety procedures to ensure a safeworkplace and minimize liability exposure to employees and the city.

    • Demonstrates an appropriate level of physical fitness and coordination to lift up to 50lbs, carry or assist in the movement of materials and supplies to fulfill the mission of theemployer and pass all random drug screen tests for maintenance of a CDL endorsement.

    Requirements
    Graduation from high school or equivalent (GED). Minimum of two (2) years of college in horticulture, turf maintenance, agronomy or closely related field OR two (2) years’ experience performing in golf course or sports field maintenance. Hold and maintain a valid Iowa driver license with a valid Iowa Class B CDL for snow removal requirements. Must be insurable and maintain insurability. Ability to keep records and reports, to work from complex oral and written directions, good interpersonal and customer service skills. Basic plumbing, electrical and mechanical knowledge preferred. Hold or be able to obtain a chemical spray license within 6 months of employment and maintain such license as a condition of continued employment.

    Prospect Meadows Sports Complex is located in Marion, IA. and is set to open May 2019.     GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:
    Under minimal supervision, the Grounds/Sportsturf Manager
    will be responsible for operations with-in maintenance, installation and supervision of all complex property.  Will be responsible for complex related property, infrastructure & equipment. 

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Coordinate routine and non-routine seasonal maintenance for the complexes trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, turfgrass and native habitat.

    • Manage all athletic and recreational turf areas

    • Monitor and maintain complex irrigation systems

    • Manage the upkeep in complex structures and systems.

    • Manage complex janitorial responsibilities

    • Supervise, evaluate, hire, train and schedule full-time & part-time personnel

    • Coordinate and manage on-site contractors

    • Monitor all equipment inventory, utilization, replacement cycles, maintenance and repairs.

    • Maintain compliance in record keeping and required training.

    • Assist user groups with complex activities

    • Manage and maintain hard surface areas of the complex (parking lots, roads, sidewalks, ADA)

    • Maintain exterior signage and banners

    • Perform other related work duties as assigned.
