    Lawn Care / Groundskeeper / Horticulturist

    What You’ll Do: As a Groundskeeper, you will assist with the maintenance of all grounds and parking areas at Farm Bureau’s West Des Moines location. You will assist with the planting, edging, pruning, fertilizing, mulching and transplanting of flowers, shrubs, trees, and bushes on our property. You will also cut the grass using foot and rider type power mowers, and operate other equipment such as a seeder, sweeper and hand power tools. It is important that you understand the various types of fertilizers and chemicals, as you will operate liquid and powder applicators applying the proper amount during the appropriate season. During the winter months, you will be responsible for removing snow and debris from walkways.

    You will work a rotational schedule Monday - Friday, with core hours being 8am-4:30pm. The rotation is one week you will work Wednesday from 5am-1:30pm, and the next week you will work Monday and Friday from 5am-1:30pm. You may work an occasional Saturday as needed, and will be on call 24/7 during snow removal – so flexibility in your schedule is key.

    What It Takes to Join Our Team:

    • High school diploma or equivalent, plus at least 2 years of horticulture, groundskeeping and/or landscaping experience required.
    • Must have or attain a Certified Applicator license (3OT (Ornamental and Turf Pest)) and maintain Continuing Education Units (C.E.U.’s) to keep the Certified Applicators license current.
    • Must be able to work under all types of weather conditions (heat, rain, snow, etc).
    • Some lifting is required (up to 100 lbs.) and extensive time is spent walking, bending and reaching.
    • Knowledge of commercial lawn mowers and small engine equipment is preferred, as well as knowledge of irrigation systems.

    Maintenance Worker Position

    Job Duties Include:  This will be a Turf Maintenance position with Parks and Recreation.  Turf areas managed include Homewood Golf Course, 35 acres of sports fields, 37 city parks, city right of way areas, and municipal cemeteries.  This position helps lead seasonal staff to maintain all areas previously stated.  Duties may also include areas outside main job duties including tree work, concrete work, cemetery burials, and more.  Weekend overtime hours are available throughout the year.  This is a Civil Service position.

                      EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY

    Athletic Facilities Supervisor

    Duties:

    This is specialized and technical work in the maintenance operations of Kent/Stein Park (baseball/softball complex), and the Muscatine Soccer Complex.  Work involves initiation, direction and performance of specialized and technical tasks relating to the maintenance and care of turf grass areas, ball diamond surfaces, irrigation system management, parking lot and landscape maintenance, operating equipment, buildings and associated components.  This position reports to the Director of Parks and Recreation.

     

    SALARY:

     Minimum starting salary $56,402 plus excellent benefits

    QUALIFICATIONS:

     

    • Graduation from high school, supplemented by additional education/training provided by college or technical school in the field of turf grass management and/or athletic field maintenance, plus a minimum of two years responsible experience in athletic field, maintenance and repair; or any equivalent combination of related technical experience, education or training which would provide the following knowledge, abilities and skills:
    • Considerable technical knowledge of the specialized methods, equipment, and materials used in the maintenance and preparation of athletic fields, sports turf grass, golf courses, landscape areas and other outdoor recreational facilities.
    • Knowledge of the rules and standards associated with the following sports: soccer, baseball, softball.
    • Ability to maintain effective relationships with supervisor, other employees and the public, and to deal with public relation problems courteously and tactfully.
    • Trains, assigns, directs and evaluates the work of other personnel or volunteers engaged in the maintenance operations of the municipal athletic facilities; assists in recruitment and hiring of seasonal facility personnel.
    • Ability to plan, organize and perform standard daily maintenance schedules to provide for efficient operation, including effectively directing work activities of subordinate personnel.
    • Must be able to lift and move heavy objects weighing up to 50 lbs. over extended periods of time.
    • Possession of a current State of Iowa Pesticide Applicator’s License within the first six (6) months of employment in this classification.
    • Possession of a current State of Iowa Driver’s License and continued maintenance of the license throughout period of employment and must be insurable by the City’s insurance company.
    • Residency in Iowa within 30 air miles of City Hall is required.
    • Must pass physical and drug screen prior to hire

      The Position:

      Grass Masters Cutting Edge is currently accepting applications for the position of Manager.  This is a full-time, year round position.  The Manager will be responsible for overseeing daily operation.

    Facilities Maintenance Worker, Senior

    Deadline: Thurs., May 16, 2019 – Under general direction, serves as Head Groundskeeper for Patriot Park; provides supervision over park staff and performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and care of playing surfaces, surrounding park grounds, and facilities. Education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and two years progressively responsible sports turf management. Preferred associate or bachelor’s degree in turf grass management. Experience with baseball/softball field maintenance desired. Valid driver’s license and ability to obtain EPA pesticide applicator’s license and Class B CDL within 12 months. $20.31 with 12 step range to $28.56 DOQ.
