Lawn Care / Groundskeeper / Horticulturist

What You’ll Do: As a Groundskeeper, you will assist with the maintenance of all grounds and parking areas at Farm Bureau’s West Des Moines location. You will assist with the planting, edging, pruning, fertilizing, mulching and transplanting of flowers, shrubs, trees, and bushes on our property. You will also cut the grass using foot and rider type power mowers, and operate other equipment such as a seeder, sweeper and hand power tools. It is important that you understand the various types of fertilizers and chemicals, as you will operate liquid and powder applicators applying the proper amount during the appropriate season. During the winter months, you will be responsible for removing snow and debris from walkways.
You will work a rotational schedule Monday - Friday, with core hours being 8am-4:30pm. The rotation is one week you will work Wednesday from 5am-1:30pm, and the next week you will work Monday and Friday from 5am-1:30pm. You may work an occasional Saturday as needed, and will be on call 24/7 during snow removal – so flexibility in your schedule is key.
What It Takes to Join Our Team:
- High school diploma or equivalent, plus at least 2 years of horticulture, groundskeeping and/or landscaping experience required.
- Must have or attain a Certified Applicator license (3OT (Ornamental and Turf Pest)) and maintain Continuing Education Units (C.E.U.’s) to keep the Certified Applicators license current.
- Must be able to work under all types of weather conditions (heat, rain, snow, etc).
- Some lifting is required (up to 100 lbs.) and extensive time is spent walking, bending and reaching.
- Knowledge of commercial lawn mowers and small engine equipment is preferred, as well as knowledge of irrigation systems.
