    • JOB DESCRIPTION

      Grounds Maintenance/Landscaper

      General Summary:

      Provide grounds maintenance for commercial properties including mowing, upkeep of landscaping, planters, trees and bushes.  In the off season, will need to provide snow removal for commercial properties with company provided equipment. 

      Job Duties and Responsibilities:

    • 1.     Maintain, upkeep and plant landscaping.  Knowledge of small power tools for trimming and pruning trees and shrubs, pulling and spraying weeds, trimming hedges, watering and fertilizing plants, leaf removal and daily trash removal at commercial properties.  Landscape new ground areas, repairs damaged ground areas, replaces bushes, hedges, shrubs and trees.  
    • 2.     Mowing: operate and maintain commercial lawn care equipment (including zero turn riding mowers, walk behind mowers, string trimmers, leaf blowers and etc.) for mowing, trimming, edging, aerating and other similar tasks at commercial properties.  
    • 3.     Ensures properties sprinklers systems are working and general upkeep to sprinkler systems. Provide light maintenance to sprinkler systems.  
    • 4.     Applies herbicide and pesticide chemicals to grounds, trees, bushes, shrubs and lawns in order to control plant diseases and insects. Company will pay for classes and license.  
    • 5.     Snow Removal: Will help with snow removal at commercial properties.
    • 6.     Building Maintenance: Perform physical tasks necessary to maintain commercial buildings.  Assist others to provide major, minor and routine maintenance and repairs in a timely and professional manner.
    • 7.     Any other job duties as assigned.
    • Other Requirements

    • 1.     Ability to operate all necessary hand tools to make repairs.
    • 2.     Must be able to work flexible hours and to be “on call” in case of an emergency; available for overtime as needed for emergencies.
    • 3.     The position of Grounds Maintenance/Landscaper must have the physical, mental and verbal ability to perform his or her duties with minimal or no assistance (although reasonable accommodations may be made to enable an individual with disabilities to perform their essential functions). Physical requirements include the ability to lift up to 50 pounds, ability to crouch, climb, crawl, etc. to make repairs and tolerance to all extremes of hot and cold weather.
    • 4.     Licensed for state chemical applications (or ability to obtain within 6 months).
    • 5.     Will need to have a valid driver’s license.  
    • Salary Range

    • 1.     $17.00 – $20.00 / Per Hour

    Experience

      The Acrylic Surface Installer is responsible for taking ownership to ensure that Mini-Pitch surfacing projects are well planned and successfully executed on time.

      Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Manage assigned projects and responsible for understanding all aspects of the surfacing process to meet customer specifications
    • Work with internal and external teams to confirm that the job site is ready for surfacing and all necessary materials, equipment, and supplies are available
    • Manage entire surfacing installation process: offloading materials, cleaning playing area, filling cracks, surfacing playing area, measuring court dimensions, and painting lines
    • Actively record and report the progress of each project with the internal team and customers
    • Work cohesively with internal engineers and on-site superintendents to ensure all project requirements and specifications are carried out successfully

    • Asphalt patching experience preferred
    • Excellent technical and problem-solving ability
    • Excellent verbal, written, and telephone communication skills

      Directs and supervises the work of parks maintenance crew within parks and recreation operations. Assists with events, programming, and organizing volunteer efforts within the parks system.

    TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Required Education and Experience

    • High School diploma or equivalency
    • Three (3) to five (5) years' experience in maintenance, construction, plumbing, electrical, turf management, budgeting and personnel supervision

    • Required Licenses or Certifications

    Lawn Care / Groundskeeper / Horticulturist

    What You’ll Do: As a Groundskeeper, you will assist with the maintenance of all grounds and parking areas at Farm Bureau’s West Des Moines location. You will assist with the planting, edging, pruning, fertilizing, mulching and transplanting of flowers, shrubs, trees, and bushes on our property. You will also cut the grass using foot and rider type power mowers, and operate other equipment such as a seeder, sweeper and hand power tools. It is important that you understand the various types of fertilizers and chemicals, as you will operate liquid and powder applicators applying the proper amount during the appropriate season. During the winter months, you will be responsible for removing snow and debris from walkways.

    You will work a rotational schedule Monday - Friday, with core hours being 8am-4:30pm. The rotation is one week you will work Wednesday from 5am-1:30pm, and the next week you will work Monday and Friday from 5am-1:30pm. You may work an occasional Saturday as needed, and will be on call 24/7 during snow removal – so flexibility in your schedule is key.

    What It Takes to Join Our Team:

    • High school diploma or equivalent, plus at least 2 years of horticulture, groundskeeping and/or landscaping experience required.
    • Must have or attain a Certified Applicator license (3OT (Ornamental and Turf Pest)) and maintain Continuing Education Units (C.E.U.’s) to keep the Certified Applicators license current.
    • Must be able to work under all types of weather conditions (heat, rain, snow, etc).
    • Some lifting is required (up to 100 lbs.) and extensive time is spent walking, bending and reaching.
    • Knowledge of commercial lawn mowers and small engine equipment is preferred, as well as knowledge of irrigation systems.

    Athletic Facilities Supervisor

    Duties:

    This is specialized and technical work in the maintenance operations of Kent/Stein Park (baseball/softball complex), and the Muscatine Soccer Complex.  Work involves initiation, direction and performance of specialized and technical tasks relating to the maintenance and care of turf grass areas, ball diamond surfaces, irrigation system management, parking lot and landscape maintenance, operating equipment, buildings and associated components.  This position reports to the Director of Parks and Recreation.

     

    SALARY:

     Minimum starting salary $56,402 plus excellent benefits

    QUALIFICATIONS:

     

    • Graduation from high school, supplemented by additional education/training provided by college or technical school in the field of turf grass management and/or athletic field maintenance, plus a minimum of two years responsible experience in athletic field, maintenance and repair; or any equivalent combination of related technical experience, education or training which would provide the following knowledge, abilities and skills:
    • Considerable technical knowledge of the specialized methods, equipment, and materials used in the maintenance and preparation of athletic fields, sports turf grass, golf courses, landscape areas and other outdoor recreational facilities.
    • Knowledge of the rules and standards associated with the following sports: soccer, baseball, softball.
    • Ability to maintain effective relationships with supervisor, other employees and the public, and to deal with public relation problems courteously and tactfully.
    • Trains, assigns, directs and evaluates the work of other personnel or volunteers engaged in the maintenance operations of the municipal athletic facilities; assists in recruitment and hiring of seasonal facility personnel.
    • Ability to plan, organize and perform standard daily maintenance schedules to provide for efficient operation, including effectively directing work activities of subordinate personnel.
    • Must be able to lift and move heavy objects weighing up to 50 lbs. over extended periods of time.
    • Possession of a current State of Iowa Pesticide Applicator’s License within the first six (6) months of employment in this classification.
    • Possession of a current State of Iowa Driver’s License and continued maintenance of the license throughout period of employment and must be insurable by the City’s insurance company.
    • Residency in Iowa within 30 air miles of City Hall is required.
    • Must pass physical and drug screen prior to hire
