    Directs and supervises the work of parks maintenance crew within parks and recreation operations. Assists with events, programming, and organizing volunteer efforts within the parks system.

    Position Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:00am-3:30pm, ability to respond to emergencies at anytime

    Successful completion of a pre-employment background check, physical examination (if applicable) and drug screen are required prior to employment with the City of Cedar Rapids.


  • Plans, organizes and supervises the maintenance activities of the parks and recreation and specialty parks
  • Operates, maintains, trains, and supervises on the use of various motorized and non-motorized  turf and grounds
  • Coordinates and provides training to new and existing seasonal and full-time maintenance staff
  • Assists in the hiring process and reviews applications, interviews and hires seasonal employees  based on staffing needs
  • Prepares and coordinates annual, monthly and weekly work schedules and assignments and workflow accordingly to meet target
  • Installs and repairs park site amenities including but not limited to trail maintenance, snow removal, flood and bridge repairs, restrooms repairs, and mechanical equipment; conducts preventive maintenance and ensures all safety inspections are completed
  • Maintains all records on maintenance and communicates across the department with managers and staff to discuss projected and current work projects
  •  Oversees and monitors inventory management and reconciles purchases supplies, equipment, tracks inventories on products and services
  •  Analyzes turf and landscapes to detect disease, wear and stress, and determines appropriate treatment and coordinates appropriate maintenance schedule
  • Coordinates logistics and communicates on special events and procedures including set up, tear down, trail prep for races, clean up for concerts, conducting repairs and other requests as necessary
  • Coordinates the work of several crews at different locations, requiring frequent travel to uphold supervisory responsibilities
  • Performs related work as required


  • Required Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or equivalency
  • Three (3) to five (5) years' experience in maintenance, construction, plumbing, electrical, turf management, budgeting and personnel supervision
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse population
  • Required Licenses or Certifications

  • Valid U.S. Driver's License
  • Iowa Pesticide Applicator's License (within 6 months of appointment)
  • Desired Qualifications

  • Supervisory experience
  • Post-secondary course work in a related skilled trade, horticulture, turf, forestry, natural resources or a related field

    Knowledge of:

  • Grounds maintenance landscaping practices and athletic field maintenance.
  • Maintenance and repairs of parks buildings and related facilities.
  • Methods and procedures for the maintenance of recreational, sports, and playground equipment.
  • Motorized equipment safety practices, procedures and preventative maintenance.
  • Operation and maintenance of specialized facilities, splash pads and irrigation systems.
  • Trail maintenance practices including concrete, asphalt and aggregate surfaces.
  • Snow removal methods and related equipment.
  • Management practices, establishment, care and maintenance of turf, trees, shrubs, flowers, native prairie landscapes and riverbank management including chemical, biological or mechanical practices.
  • Skill in:

  • Time and organizational management.
  • Writes routine reports and delivers correspondence.
  • Data entry, budgeting and record keeping functions.
  • Performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature.
  • Handling difficult interpersonal situations with tact while maintaining a professional demeanor.
  •  Instructing, assigning, prioritizing, monitoring, reviewing work assignments and obtaining compliance from staff.
  • Ability to:

  •  Maintain power tools and machine equipment.
  •   Utilize hand and power tool equipment.
  •   Operate, maintain and perform minor repairs to pumps, valves and other irrigation equipment.
  •   Respond to emergencies at all hours to include evenings and weekends.
  •   Operate workflow management system.
  •   Analyze situations and solve problems using innovative solutions.
  •    Keep current with industry best practices and new technology.
  •    Work cooperatively, develop, and maintain effective working relationships.
